If you work for yourself, whether as a freelancer, consultant, coach, tradesman or creative, finding the right accountant for self employed professionals can make a real difference to how much time and money you save each year. At Account Ease, we work with self-employed people across the UK who want their tax handled properly, without the stress of doing it alone.
We built our service around the way self-employed people actually work, remotely, flexibly, and often outside normal office hours. Everything is handled online, our fees are fixed and transparent, and you always have a real accountant to speak to, not a call centre. Thousands of self-employed professionals across the UK already trust us with their tax affairs, and we would welcome the chance to do the same for you.
Self-employed is a broad term, and we mean that genuinely. Our clients include creatives, coaches, consultants, tradesmen, and professionals across dozens of industries who all share one thing in common: they want their tax handled properly by people who understand their world. If you want to see how we compare to other firms, our page on the top rated tax accountants for self-employed professionals explains what sets our approach apart.
A good accountant for self employed clients does far more than fill in a tax return. We register you with HMRC, keep your records straight throughout the year, work out what you owe, and flag deadlines before they become a problem. Many people start out managing their own books and only bring in an accountant once things get complicated, a second income stream, a big equipment purchase, or their first VAT threshold scare. The truth is, most self-employed professionals save more in tax and time than they spend on our fees, simply because we know where to look and what HMRC actually allows.
Every self-employed person in the UK needs to file a self assessment tax return each year, with the online deadline falling on 31 January. Miss it, even by a day, and HMRC issues an automatic £100 penalty, with further charges building up the longer it goes unpaid. We take care of the whole process for our clients, from registering as self-employed through to submitting the return itself, so nothing slips through the cracks. If you have missed a deadline before, we can also help you get back on track and deal with HMRC directly on your behalf.
One of the biggest reasons people search for an accountant for self employed work is expenses. Get this wrong and you either pay more tax than you need to, or claim for things HMRC will query. Common allowable expenses include a proportion of home office costs such as heating and internet, tools and equipment, business travel and mileage, software subscriptions, professional insurance, and training directly related to your trade. The rules differ depending on whether you use simplified flat rates or work out actual costs, and this is exactly the sort of detail we go through with every client so nothing is missed or overclaimed.
National Insurance often catches self-employed people out because it works differently to PAYE. Class 2 contributions were abolished from April 2024, so most self-employed people no longer pay them directly. If your profits sit above the small profits threshold, your National Insurance record is treated as maintained automatically, and if you fall below it, you can choose to pay voluntary Class 2 contributions to protect your State Pension. Class 4 National Insurance is charged at 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, dropping to 2% on anything above that, and is collected through your self assessment return alongside income tax. We calculate this as part of every tax return we prepare, so there are no surprises when the bill arrives.

From April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000 must start using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, keeping digital records and sending quarterly updates to HMRC instead of one annual return. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027, bringing many more self-employed professionals into scope. According to GOV.UK guidance, spreadsheets alone will no longer be accepted, so HMRC-recognised software becomes essential. If you already run as a sole trader, our guide to Making Tax Digital for sole traders covers this in more depth, but the short version is that the earlier you prepare, the smoother the switch will be. We can get your records digital and compliant well before your start date arrives.
Whatever your trade, whether you are a freelance designer, an experienced tradesman, an independent consultant or one of the many freelancers we support, our fixed monthly fees mean you always know what you are paying with no surprise bills at year end. As a dedicated accountant for self employed clients, we combine bookkeeping, self assessment, National Insurance calculations and Making Tax Digital compliance into one straightforward service. You can see exactly what is included on our pricing and plans page, and our team is always on hand if your circumstances change during the year.

There is no legal requirement to use an accountant at any income level, but most self-employed people below £50,000 still choose to, mainly to make sure allowable expenses are claimed correctly and deadlines are never missed. Many find the fee pays for itself in tax savings alone.
Costs vary depending on the complexity of your income and how much support you need, but fixed monthly fees typically work out cheaper than paying penalties or overpaying tax through missed expenses. Our pricing page sets out our packages clearly.
Self-employed describes how you work, essentially working for yourself rather than an employer. Sole trader is the legal structure most self-employed people operate under. In practice, the vast majority of self-employed individuals in the UK are sole traders, and the terms are often used interchangeably.
